LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- A 13-year-old boy from Lawton is celebrating a major accomplishment--- a perfect score on the ACT.
Anthony Nguyen was selected along with 84 other students from across the state to attend Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics. The program will count as his last two years of high school and first two years of college.
"Once that midnight clock was going down, I was on call with a friend," said Anthony. "Literally counting down the seconds like New Year's or something along that line. When I got that 36 I pretty much kicked down my parents' bedroom door."
That was Anthony's reaction after he got his ACT results on June 19, a 36 out of 36.
He said he's been taking the test since he finished the sixth grade.
"I was pretty much screaming out I got a 36 and I woke my sister up," he said. "I don't think she was pleased with it."
Throughout the school year he studied two days out the week but bumped it up to nearly every day in the summer.
Anthony said he's used to studying at Lawton Academy of Arts and Sciences. He skipped preschool, first grade and seventh grade. He said his favorite subject is math.
"You can't just go off principles," he said. "You have to go through a problem-solving process and when you do get it after spending I don't know ten plus minutes a problem. It feels good getting it."
Which his Principal and teacher Michelle Smith said is just one of many subjects he excels in.
"Everything he does he puts one hundred percent in," said Smith. "He is open to coaching. When you are that smart sometimes it's hard to be humble, but he has learned that and has become quite an asset. And I am going to miss him this year."
Anthony said with the help of his parents he will continue to strive forward in his education. He offers one piece of advice for those trying to reach that perfect score.
"If you keep on practicing," he said. "Maybe take practice ACT and a real ACT to get the feel of it. Most people they don't get a perfect score the first time. They must take it multiple times to get used to it. So, yes I think practice has to be the most important part."
Anthony will start at his new school in August and graduate high school at 15 years old. He said after graduation he plans to go to OU to finish getting his degree in computer engineering.
